Pathways Spiritual Direction

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a one-to-one, confidential practice that supports individuals in deepening their relationship with Spirit. A Spiritual Director offers attentive, prayerful listening and companionship, helping the Directee reflect on their spiritual life, inner movements, questions, and experiences of meaning.

Spiritual Direction is not counseling or advice-giving. Instead, it creates space to listen for how Spirit may be present and inviting response in daily life. Discernment around prayer, vocation, life transitions, or spiritual practices may be part of this work. Sessions are typically one hour in length and occur about once a month.

Confidentiality and supervision are integral parts of Spiritual Direction.

Stories & Testimonials

Story 1: Finding Clarity in a Season of Change

“I came to spiritual direction feeling restless but unable to name why. On paper, my life looked stable. Inside, I felt unsettled.” Over several months of meeting at the Ranch, this directee began noticing subtle movements in prayer and daily life. Through gentle questions and attentive listening, they began recognizing a quiet invitation toward vocational change. No advice was given. No pressure applied. Just space to listen deeply. “What surprised me most was that the clarity was already within me. Spiritual direction didn’t give me answers. It helped me trust the ones unfolding.” Today, they describe feeling aligned rather than anxious. The external circumstances did not shift overnight. But their interior compass did.

Story 2: Learning to Hear God Again

“Prayer had become silent. I kept wondering if I was doing something wrong.” After years of active church involvement, this directee entered a season of spiritual dryness. They worried their faith was fading. Instead of being offered solutions, they were offered presence. In the quiet rhythm of monthly sessions, they explored grief, exhaustion, and unspoken disappointment with God. Over time, they began to notice subtle signs of grace in ordinary moments: morning light through trees, a conversation that lingered, the steady breath of prayer returning. “I realized God had not left. I had simply been trying too hard to perform.” Spiritual direction became less about fixing faith and more about resting in relationship

Story 3: Integrating Loss and Hope

“When my father died, I didn’t just lose him. I lost my sense of who I was.” Grief reshaped this directee’s inner world. Questions about purpose, identity, and God’s presence surfaced all at once. Therapy had helped with coping skills. Spiritual direction helped with meaning. In sacred, confidential conversation, they were able to speak honestly about anger, doubt, and longing without fear of correction. Over time, their grief softened from sharp pain into a quieter companion. “I learned that God was not asking me to ‘move on.’ God was meeting me in the ache.” Spiritual direction gave them language for lament and permission for hope to return gently, at its own pace.
